Getting started
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store and open it from Apps in your Shopify admin.
- On the Rules page, choose Create rule, or open Templates and pick a starting point.
- Give the rule a name, set its conditions, and write the message shoppers will see.
- Test it against a sample cart (see below), then save. A saved rule that is turned on applies to checkout straight away.
A rule blocks checkout when its conditions are true. For example “Cart subtotal is less than 50” blocks every cart under $50, and the shopper sees your message until they add more.
Templates
Templates cover the common cases: order minimum and maximum, quantity per item, total quantity, allowed or blocked countries, blocked ZIP or postal codes, required customer tag, account required, required cart attribute, PO number format and product metafield gates. Each opens in the builder with defaults you can change. The full list, with the message each one shows, is on the templates page.
The builder and expression mode
Builder
Pick a field (cart subtotal, line quantity, customer tags, delivery country and more), an operator and a value. Group conditions with all of or any of. Line-item fields can check whether any, every or no line matches.
Expression mode (Pro)
For logic the builder can’t express, write the condition as an expression, for example not attr("po_number") matches "^PO-\d+$". The editor checks the expression as you type and shows where it stops making sense.
Where the message appears
Choose where Shopify shows the message: at the top of checkout (the whole cart), or next to the email, phone, delivery country, province or ZIP field.
Testing a rule
In the rule builder, Test this rule runs the rule against sample carts: a guest buying one item, a wholesale customer’s bulk order, an international address and a large multi-line cart. It shows whether checkout would be blocked and the exact message, using the same rule engine that runs in checkout.
To try it for real, turn the rule on and go through checkout on your store with a cart that should be blocked.
Plans and what happens when you change plan
- Free: up to 3 rules, built with the visual builder.
- Pro: up to 25 rules (Shopify’s limit per store), expression mode and product metafield conditions, with a 14-day free trial.
Change plan from the app’s Plan page. If your store moves from Pro to Free, because you downgraded, cancelled or the trial ended, the app keeps every rule but turns some off:
- every rule that uses expression mode or a product metafield condition;
- then, if more than 3 rules are still on, every rule beyond the 3 oldest.
The Rules page lists what was turned off. Nothing is deleted; upgrade again and turn the rules back on.
Troubleshooting
A rule doesn’t block a cart it should
- Check the rule is turned on, on the Rules page.
- Check it in your Shopify admin under Settings › Checkout › Checkout rules: it should be listed and active there too.
- Run Test this rule with a sample cart that matches your case.
- Rules on email or delivery address need Shopify’s approval for protected customer data; until that is in place those fields read as empty.
A rule blocks carts it shouldn’t
Remember the rule blocks when its conditions are true. “Cart subtotal is less than 50” blocks small carts; to block large ones use “greater than”. Turn the rule off from the Rules page to stop it immediately.
I can’t add another rule
Free stores can have 3 rules, and Shopify allows at most 25 checkout rules per store, including rules from other apps. Delete rules you no longer need, or upgrade to Pro.
Still stuck?
Write to support with your store address and the rule’s name.
